Potential Song Choice 3

Artist-Jessie J
Album-Who you are
Song-Who's laughing now (3.54)
Release date-August 2011
Genre of artist-R&B, pop, hip hop, dance, electronica, soul, reggae
Lyrics-
Mummy they call me names
They wouldn't let me play
I'd run home, sit and cry almost everyday
'Hey Jessica, you look like an alien
With green skin you don't fit in this playpen'
Well they pull my hair
They took away my chair
I keep it in and pretend that I didn't care
'Hey Jessica, you're so funny
You've got teeth just like Bugs bunny'

Oh, so you think you know me now
Have you forgotten how
You would make me feel
When you drag my spirit down
But thank you for the pain
It made me raise my game
And I'm still rising, I'm still rising
Yeah

So make your jokes
Go for broke
Blow your smoke
You're not alone
But who's laughing now
But who's laughing now
So raise the bar
Hit me hard
Play your cards
Be a star
But who's laughing now
But who's laughing now

Cos I'm in L.A
You think I've made my fame
If it makes us friends
When you only really know my name
'Oh Jessie, we knew you could make it
I've got a track and I'd love you to take it'
So now because I'm signed
You think my pockets lined
4 years now and I'm still waiting in the line
'Oh Jessie, I saw you on youtube
I tagged old photos from when we was at school'

Oh, so you think you know me now
Have you forgotten how
You would make me feel
When you drag my spirit down
But thank you for the pain
It made me raise my game
And I'm still rising, I'm still rising
Yeah

So make your jokes
Go for broke
Blow your smoke
You're not alone
But who's laughing now
But who's laughing now
So raise the bar
Hit me hard
Play your cards
Be a star
But who's laughing now
But who's laughing now

Jessie
She broke out of the box
Swallowed your prideqw
You got that ego cough
Let the haters hate
You're like way too late
See I got a message from you
'Hola, I'm proud of you'
'Oh my god babe your voice is like wow!'
My reply: Who's laughing now

Oh, so you think you know me now
Have you forgotten how
You would make me feel
When you drag my spirit down
But thank you for the pain
It made me raise my game
And I'm still rising, I'm still rising
Yeah

So make your jokes
Go for broke
Blow your smoke
You're not alone
But who's laughing now
But who's laughing now
So raise the bar
Hit me hard
Play your cards
Be a star
But who's laughing now
But who's laughing now

So make your jokes
Go for broke
Blow your smoke
You're not alone
But who's laughing now
But who's laughing now
So raise the bar
Hit me hard
Play your cards
Be a star
But who's laughing now

Reason-i decided to choose this song because it is more up beat than the other two and i wanted a mixture but this song would be really good to do a music video with disjuncture or amplification because it is quite a powerful song i think and with amplification it could make it really mean something.

Potential Song Choice 2

Artist-Peter Andre
Album-Accelerate
Song-Perfect Night (3.52)
Release date-2nd July 2011
Genre of artist-Pop, R&B
Lyrics-
I Dream Of You
Waiting For You
To See Im Still Here

Coz I Just Want To Love You Better
Better Than Anyone
Coz When You Shine Your Light Upon Me
Its Brighter Than The Morning Sun
I Just Want To Love You Better
And Show You

Starlight Moonlight
What You Deserve
Dinner With A Candle And Music And Fireworks
If You Give Me This Chance
We Could Have The Perfect Night
Starlight Moonlight
And Shooting Stars
Moving To The Rhythm And Dancing To Soft Guitars
If You Give Me This Chance
We Could Have The Perfect Night

Lost Inside Of You
Torn Without You
You Know That Im Still Here

Now I Just Want To Hold You Tighter
Tighter Than Anyone
Coz When You Put Your Arms Around Me
Its Warmer Than The Morning Sun
And I Just Want To Take You Higher
And Show You

Starlight Moonlight
What You Deserve
Dinner With A Candle And Music And Fireworks
If You Give Me This Chance
We Could Have The Perfect Night
Starlight Moonlight
And Shooting Stars
Moving To The Rhythm And Dancing To Soft Guitars
If You Give Me This Chance
We Could Have The Perfect Night

Let Me Show You [ Shooting Stars ]

Starlight Moonlight
What You Deserve
Dinner With A Candle And Music And Fireworks
If You Give Me This Chance
We Could Have The Perfect Night
Starlight Moonlight
And Shooting Stars
Moving To The Rhythm And Dancing To Soft Guitars
If You Give Me This Chance
We Could Have The Perfect Night

Reason-this song is kind of a love story so i think it would be easy to do an illustration video where the video and lyrics show the same thing. I also particually enjoy the song because of the guitar bits in it so i could maybe work with that.

Potential Song Choice 1

Artist-Jessie J

Album-Who you are

Song-Who you are (3.50)
Release date-28th February 2011
Genre of artist-R&B, pop, hip hop, dance, electronica, soul, reggae
Lyrics-
I stare at my reflection in the mirror...
Why am I doing this to myself?
Losing my mind on a tiny error,
I nearly left the real me on the shelf...
"no, no, no, no..."

To lose it all in the blur of the start!
Seeing is deceiving, dreaming is believing,
It's okay not to be okay...
Sometimes it's hard, to follow your heart.
Tears don't mean you're losing, everybody's bruising,
Just be true to who you are!
(Who you are)x11

Brushing my hair, do I look perfect?
I forgot what to do to fit the mold, yeah!
The more I try the less is working yeah yeah yeah
'Cause everything aside me screams, "no, no, no, no..."

To lose it all in the blur of the start!
Seeing is deceiving, dreaming is believing,

It's okay not to be okay...
Sometimes it's hard, to follow your heart.
But tears don't mean you're losing, everybody's bruising,
There's nothing wrong with who you are!
http://www.elyricsworld.com/who_you_are_lyrics_jessie_j.html

Yes?, he goes, fake shows
Like "wow", just go, and leave me alone!
Real talk, real life, good love, goodnight,
With a smile...
That's my own! (that is my own) "no, no, no, no..."

To lose it all in the blur of the start!
Seeing is deceiving, dreaming is believing,
It's okay not to be okay...
Sometimes it's hard, to follow your heart.
Tears don't mean you're losing, everybody's bruising,
Just be true to who you are!
Yeah yeah yeah
Reason for choice-i think this song could be a good song choice because it is a nice slow song and hasn't been released of the album so only people who have bought her album will know it. Also you could make a good narrative video as the lyrics have a very emotional meaning.

Detailed Textual Analysis of a Music Video

Music video- Detailed textual anaylsis

Cheryl Cole- The Flood

Context

'The Flood' was written by Priscilla Hamilton and Wayne Wilkins for British recording artist Cheryl Cole It was for Cheryl's second album 'Messy Little Raindrops'(2010). 'The Flood was released on January 2 2011 through Fascination Records as the albums second single. The song is soft rock and has lyrics that refer to a "natural disater love" and make refrences to the allusion of shipwrecks, the sea and water.
'The Flood' recieved a mixture of reviews from music critics, some saying that the song was perfectly suited to her voice and others questioning her voice as a ballader. 'The Flood' peaked at number 18 in the UK charts and was the first of Cole's singles not to reach the top five.
The song was accomapained by a music video directed by Sophie Muller in November 24 2010. Filmed on the southern coast of England against a backdrop of white cliffs, it portrays Cole alone in a remote house overlooking a stormy ocean, while she struggles to adjust to life without her love.

Lyrics

Turn the lights out, in the light house,
I saw you coming,
Felt the ship wreck
Saw the wreckage, I heard you yelling,
Just a mess when I saw your reflection in the sand,
Wondering where you were washed up,
Or I ran to the water, Mmmmm,
I can put my hands down in it,
But I won’t bring nothing up,
Sitting at the shore all day, waiting on the tide to come

But you can’t hold on to water,
It fills you up but never stays,
It’s only good to wash away,
Today and your loving me like water,
You’re slipping through my fingers touch,
Natural disaster love, bringing on the flood,
The flood,
Love me like a flood, the flood,
Bring it on,

Stay the night out, by the beach house,
It’s oh so quiet,
Lit a candle,
By the window, so you might find it,
Hope you know you’ll always have a place to call your home,
Still I can’t help but think I could have saved you from drowning,
Ohhh, oh,
I can put my hands down in it, yeah,
But I won’t bring nothing up,
Sitting on the shore all day
Just waiting on the tide to come,

But you can’t hold on to water,
It fills you up but never stays,
It’s only good to wash away,
Today and your loving me like water,
You’re slipping through my fingers touch,
Natural disaster love, bringing on the flood,
The flood,
Love me like a flood, the flood,
Bring it on,

I knew the waves were icy, when I felt them all retreating,
Went to take a dive in the deep end,
Oh, what was I thinking?

But you can’t hold on to water,
It fills you up but never stays,
It’s only good to wash away,
Today and your loving me like water,
You’re slipping through my fingers touch,
Natural disaster love, bringing on the flood,
The flood,
Love me like a flood, the flood,
Bring it on,
Ohohohoh Ohohohoh
Rising and falling in my dreams,
Rising and the falling of my tears that fill the ocean, (the ocean, the ocean)

Content
The video starts of with a still mid shot of a window with a reckless ocean on the other side, then the music starts and we go to a high angle image of the artist Cheryl Cole laying in a double bed with white sheets. We then get a close up of a candle flame which stays there for seconds then disapears, next is an extreme close up of the restless ocean out of the window. Then there is a close up of the artists face whilst she is lying in the bed from the side, which leads into a close up of two hands coming together. This whole sequence is then repeated but a bit faster then singing starts. We then have a mid shot of cheryl walking towards this window which is looking out at the ocean, we then see what Cheryl is looking at so we have a close up of the ocean. These two shots are then repeated whilst Cheryl is singing, because Cheryl is singing parts of the song we can connect with it and get the sense that the song has a meaning to the artist in this case it being Cheryl. We then have another high angle image of Cheryl in the double bed but this time she is rolling around in distress. Then when the chorous comes in we see a mid shot of Cheryl walking out of the house or beach house or whatever it is walking towards the ocean. She is wearing a coat and a scarf which is the use of mise-en-scene which emphasises the fact that shes going out side and it might be cold but she doesn't care. We then have a shot of her siging at the window sill she is singing the line "it fills you up but never stays" this line could be on about water but it could also be about her lover who seems to just come as and when he pleases. The next few shots are of Cheryl running around the beach right near the water and the lighting on these few shots is very dim showing the sadness and lonly ness she feels also the fact that you dont see anyone else on the beach emphasises the fact that she is lonely. Then the song lyrics say "you're slipping through my fingers touch" and at this point we get the shot of two hands comeing apart which emphasises this line of lyrics so shes saying there no longer together. Then we get to the big part of the chorous and as she sings "bringing on the flood, the flood, love me like a flood, the flood" she looks like shes standing high above the ocean and singing with all her heart and the ocean is very rough and waves are smashing everywhere which narrates the lyrics with the video. "lit a candle by the window, so you might find it" then theres a shot of her lighting a candle in a dark room so her lover can find it and come back hopefully. We then have a shot of Cheryl in a mermade costume in a room which looks under the water so she is emplying that she is part of the water and part of her lovers life. The next scene is where she realises her love isnt coming back and she blows the candle out which was meant to be to show her lover the way but she had enough. We then have a close up of Cheryl's face were she is singing the lines "I knew the waves were icy, when I felt them all retreating,Went to take a dive in the deep end,Oh, what was I thinking?" this emplys that she wanted him but then she realised how stupid she was being by taking him back and that's why it says "went to take a dive in the deap end oh what was i thinking" because she was going to have him back but after everything hes done she realises he's not worth it. Then it comes to the end of the song and we see the clips from through out the video played really fast and building up the story. And then we have Cheryl walking out of the house again with a smile on her face and this time it seems to be lighter which shows she is in a happier mood which is good.

Brief Textual Analysis of a Music Video

1. Name of artist
Jessie J
2.Title of song
Nobody's Perfect
3.Date of release
30/05/11
4.Director of video
Emil Nava
5.What genre of music does this song fall into
R&B
6.Is there a relationship between lyrics and visuals in the song
There is relationship between the visuals and the lyrics as when the lyrics say 'If i could turn back the hands of time' she then enters a room full of clocks and is even wearing clocks on her jacket and even her nails are made of clock pieces e.g the hands and the cogs
7.Is there a relationship between music and visuals?
Throughout the whole video there is alot of cutting to different parts but i don't think it cuts in time to the music but the cutting does seem to speed up as the instrumental bits come in
8.What is the importance of the artist in the visuals?
In the video it shows Jessie being not normal but it shows her unique style both in clothing and in the way she acts. She has alot of input in what she wears in the video so it represents her style in a very good way. The video was inspired by Lewis Carrols classic tale 'Alice In Wonderland' this can be seen by the big table at the beggining which looks like the mad hatters tea party. Also the part where she is in the corridor with lots of doors is inspired by 'Scooby Doo' and 'Alice In Wonderland'. It does relate to other video's by Jessie J like 'Do It Like A Dude' because she just seems to bring something new to it all and puts her own unique style into the video which makes it more exciting.
9.is there any voyeurism in the video?
There is a part in the video where there is a clip of her last single 'Do It Like A Dude'
10.Does the video have any intertextuality?
Yes, it shows influences from Lewis Carrols 'Alice In Wonderland'also from 'Scooby Doo' and 'the statue of liberty'.
11.What is the mixture in the video between performance and narrative?
It is mainly a story throughout so mainly narrative but during it Jessie is constantly singing to the camera so it could be performance aswell. This may be because Jessie isnt a band she is a solo artist and her voice is her instrument and because she does the videos herself she put narrative and performance together to create a greater feeling.

My Favourite Music Video

Jessie J- Nobody's Perfect
Release Date- 30/05/11

www.youtube.com/watch?v=aSZVYZTze74

I chose Jessie J's Nobody's Perfect music video because i like the way how it is different and not normal. It has a weird but unique style to it which i like because they've not copied any other video really its new and exciting. I also like the special effects in the video as they look cool and very modern i also like the fact that the musician this being Jessie J is the star of the video and doesnt have any double she does all her own stunts.
I found it really hard to chose one favourite music video as there are so many that i like but all of them have different things in them that i like for example in Cheryl Cole's Fight For This Love i particually like the dance routine that is in it and i like the military theme it makes the song have a meaning and a purpose.
Jessie J's Nobody's Perfect is Illustrating, Amplifying and Disjuncture. There are different parts in the video which show these three things for example the bit at the beggining where there are all different kinds of people at a table it shows the meaning of what is perfect? and makes you think so it is illustrating but the bit where she is in a corridor just walking is disjuncture because it has no imediate meaning and is really nothing to do with the song.

Lesson:8th June 2011

In todays lesson we were put into two groups, each group was given a set of cards, within this set of cards was a set of orange cards a set of blue cards and a set of yellow cards. On the blue cards was Mr Henton's choice of his most remeberable music videos of all time on the orange cards was different types of technologies and the yellow cards was about the growth in different music programmes and artists. In our group we then had to decide on which year we thought each thing had happened, we then went into the corridor and we had to place the cards on a timeline where we thought they had happened.

Evaluation of As Foundation Portfolio

In my As foundation portfolio i reckon my weaknesses were in the construction and the evaluation. In the construction i did not do as much of the editing as i maybe should have so i now have a lower understanding of the program final cut then anyone else who was in my group. To overcome this problem i maybe could in my spare time play about with final cut and familliarise my self with the program. In the evaluating i did answer two of the questions out of 7 but we as a grouop helped each other and i reckon if i had done it on my own i would have not done as well and also i did leave answering the questions til the last minute so i panicked so maybe i could structure my time to make sure i have time to answer them thourghly.

I reckon that my strenghts are the use of the camera i did alot of work with the camera and became familliar with the camera and its functions. My reasearch and planning was also a strong point for me as i think i addressed all that needed to be done and everything i did was regully updated to my blog.
